Good source of Hawaiian specials is travel section of LA Times' Sunday paper. If you don't live in Southern CA area, you could check it out at any public libraries, Border's or Barnes & Nobles bookstores.

AIRLINE TICKETS

Sometimes, it might be cheaper to buy two tickets specially when Southwest has $198 sale. First ticket to West Coast and second ticket from West Coast to Hawaii. Usually one can find bargains from either LA or San Francisco. ATA and Sun Quest tickets from California to Hawaii are heavily discounted. Please check LA Times Sunday Travel section.

Redeeming Frequent Flyer miles for Hawaiian tickets is one of the better values for using frequent flyer miles especially if you are flying from non West Coast cities. Most of airlines allow a stop-over in west coast at no extra cost nor miles; you can visit LA, San Francisco, or Las Vegas on the way or on the way back. Even if you don't have enough miles for the award tickets, you can get an inter-island ticket for 5K miles saving about $100-$110.

It's cheaper to buy inter-island tickets in Hawaii (around $50-$55)
AAA members get 25% off on Aloha tickets
You can save around $100-$120 by redeeming 5K miles for 1 inter-island RT ticket
Aloha Airlines: United Airlines, Northwest Airlines (must in conjunction with NW Hawaiian award ticket)
Hawaii Airlines: American Airlines, Northwest Airlines; Continental Airlines require 10K miles

LODGING

If you are redeeming AA or UA FF miles, look for hotel certificates that are included in your award ticket. They are 50% off the rack rate and good for Hyatt, Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton, Westin, and luxury Collection resorts. For example, Kauai Hyatt can be booked for around $170/night with the certificate. PLEASE note that these 50% rates are capacity controlled (meaning limited availability) so you need to reserve ahead.
